Our Story
CLUB DE L’AGE D’OR- SAINT-FRANCOIS
LES FORGES DE LEDGES
It is 1972 that the elderly citizens of the parish regrouped to form le Club d’Age d’Or Les Forges de Ledges.
Sir Uldéric Levasseur was appointed as the president, assisted by Mme Rose Landry secretary and by Miss Victoria Pelletier, treasurer. Sir Valmond Émond, Léon Landry, Émile Pelletier, Jos Michaud, George Pelletier and Moïse Nadeau as well as miss Maria Levasseur, Laura Sirois and Reine Pelletier were later named directors.
The first local de l’âge d'Or was located in the church Saint-François-Xavier basement. In 1976, the Club got the old regional school from the Ministry of Education as long as the volunteers took care of it. During the school demolition, the club's dirigents succeeded in protecting the local and kitchen. A few years later the local was enlargement to what it is today. Multiple persons have worked voluntarily to reduce the work cost to the minimum. The volunteers' implication repeats again today during any events.
Since the beginning, multiple activities happened in the Club. Still today, they are many: supers, monthly dances, card games, line dance courses and conferences. The local is accessible to the public for different occasions: weddings, anniversaries, baby showers, family reunions, conferences, workshops for local business employees and funeral services.
The Nouveaux horizons project for the elderly assisted in the renovation of the building in multiple instances. A few years ago, thanks to the same program, the direction decided to develop the restrooms to be accessible to people with reduced mobility. It had become a necessity.
It is finally in 2017, after multiple direction comity, that we became the owners of the establishment after une entente avec l’Évêque catholique romain. ÉBeing the owners, it is our duty to keep the local in good condition and to lessen to the community.
The encouragement, dedication, and ongoing work of the volunteers make it possible to ameliorate our installations to better respond to the community's needs. This old school turned into a community local keeps giving special services to the population of the Haut-Madawaska and this for the last fifty years.
